VALUE & GOALS SETTING

Now is the perfect time to reflect on your goals for the coming new year. You may have goals yet do the correlate with your values? A value is your reason to get up in the morning. You always find time and energy for it. Everything you do is geared towards that value. You don’t have to push yourself to do it. So if something you do is an effort then likely not high on your list of values. Or you do not see how that activity can assist you doing your highest value.

Techniques to discover your values are done by many.  One such teacher of these techniques is Dr John Demartini. Demartini is a world famous teacher, researcher, author and Chiropractor. His personal life story is inspiring, someone who walks the path that he teaches. You can read more about him on his website https://drdemartini.com/dr_demartini. You will also find on his website his free “determining your values” questionnaire tool.  These questions have been designed to help you determine your current top 5 values.

Following is Kimba’s guide (adapted from somewhereJ) on how to determine your values and then set you goals according to those values.  Goals setting takes place in various time frames eg. 1 year, 5 years, 30 years etc. If you’re new to this I would start with next year until you get the hang of it and expand your imagination from there. To help you follow the steps I have listed below:

#1 DETERMINE YOUR CURRENT SET OF VALUES:
Visit https://drdemartini.com/values/login
You will be asked to create a free account. The benefit of this is that you can compare your lists periodically and login at anytime. Follow the instructions to complete the questionnaire; my recent one took about 20 minutes. Review your results.  You may or may not be surprised by your list of values.

#2 WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR NEXT YEAR?
Think about your goals for next year and how it aligns to your highest value. Remember a value is something you naturally find time and energy for. A goal set in the frame of your highest value provides that goal energy. The goal will feel attainable, like destiny and that nothing could stop you from achieving it. A goal set with your values will often reveal something you truly want in life and fuel your fire to obtain it.

For example: If family is your #1 value, what goals can you set yourself that give you more time with your family? It could even be planning a long overdue family holiday. There are no right or wrong answers, use your imagination.

#3 PLAN TO ACHIEVE:
Ask yourself, what do I need to do to achieve this goal? Detail here is crucial! Think about what goes into making a cake for example. Do I put the ingredients into a bowl, mix it and then put it in the oven? Not if I want a successful cake!  To make the cake I need to firstly decide on the cake (goal), find a recipe, check the ingredients in the cupboard, write a shopping list for the things I don’t have, allocate time to go to the store to buy the ingredients…you get the point. DETAILS!  What is my plan? If I want to go on a holiday with my family in August there are many steps between now and then that I need to do to achieve it.

#4 HAVE VISION FOR THE POSITIVE: Next use vision. What will my life look like when I achieve my goal?  This is the fun stage of imagination and daydreaming. Imagine what you will be seeing and smelling. Where will you be? How did you get there? How do you feel leading up to the goal being achieved? Excited? How do you feel being there in that moment? What will your life be like afterwards? How will the people around you feel? Does this goal lead you to achieving more goals? How will your life change after you achieve this goal? Get in deep to this one the brain loves experiencing all the senses. Convince your brain you are already there.

#5 HAVE VISION FOR THE NEGATIVE:
Similarly also think about how your life will be if you don’t achieve the goal? How will you feel? How will people around you feel? What are the positives of not achieving the goal? What are the negatives of not achieving the goal?  If you have come to this part and thought there are no negatives of me achieving my goal look again. Life is a balance there is always a positive and negative to everything.

#6. OBSTACLES:
What obstacles will you face in achieving your goal? You may have already thought of some when in step 3 planning. I always think about Steve Jobs and Apple in this and the next step.  Apple didn’t just tackle obstacles as they came. They thoroughly thought about what obstacles there might be and worked out how to handle them. Which leads us to step #7.

#7 HANDLING THE OBSTACLES:
What steps do you need to take to overcome the obstacles? “Stuff” happens! If you think about the “stuff” that could happen and have a plan to handle the “stuff”, you are better equipped at the time to do just that.

I myself have found this process of using my values to set goals highly beneficially. I am grateful and inspired each time I achieve a goal I have set. This process will help you stay focused, energised and inspired on what you truly want out of life. You may even decide to do this process as a family. Happy value hunting and goal setting!
